The Power of Pink - Breast Cancer Awareness
Every October the power of pink increases as we observe Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each year we are saturated with campaigns intended to promote awareness, raise funds, educate, further research, or support women impacted by the disease. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in a life time. Breast cancer is also the second most diagnosed cancer among women. As a breast cancer survivor, I can attest to experiencing how it feels to reach my lowest point physically. After overcoming 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, and multiple reconstructive surgeries I am happy to report I am now in my 5th year of remission! The uncertainty that accompanies a cancer diagnosis creates the opportunity to look at life from a different perspective. It also allows one to see the value in physical health.
The end of the year is approaching quickly. If you’re reading this, you are one amazing human being! The past year has revealed more than we could have ever imagined. Through it all you are still standing. That is a sure sign there’s much more for you to fulfill in this life. I realize it’s easy to become caught up in daily routines, but it takes unique effort to create a healthy lifestyle. Believe it or not, making space to prioritize physical health directly impacts everything from your mental well-being to your purpose in life!
Establishing healthy eating habits and making physical fitness a top priority leads to an improved quality of life. Studies have shown that maintaining good physical health could lower your blood pressure, improve blood flow, improve respiratory and cardiovascular health, regulate weight, reduce the risk of cancer, and even boost your mood naturally! Scheduling routine physicals and mammograms ensure we receive the medical care that is best fit for our individual needs. Incorporating a self-care routine is also essential to supporting your physical health journey.
Let’s remember, that Rome wasn’t built in a day. I encourage you to begin with a 30 day challenge. Start by drinking more water, limiting sugar intake, walking, or exercising consistently. Be patient with yourself as you evolve on your journey. Small health choices make a big difference in the long run!
